Forewarned is Forearmed - Mareeba growers invited to prepare for extreme weather
Ahead of storm season, growers in Mareeba and surrounds are invited to Forewarned is Forearmed, a workshop at the Mareeba International Club on Tuesday 3 October exploring the use of climate forecasting tools to support on-farm decision-making.
Hosted by Growcom, the projects delivery arm of the Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers, in conjunction with the TNQ Drought Hub, and Gulf Savannah NRM, the workshop will provide a one-stop-shop connecting the region’s growers with technology, resources, and information on funding support to increase their preparedness for extreme weather events.
Representatives from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), QRIDA, and the Rural Financial Counselling Service North Queensland will also share insights with workshop goers.
Attendees will be equipped with hands-on understanding of tools like My Climate View, which allows growers to seek climate information related to their location and commodity.
Growcom’s Resilience Manager Karen George remarked on how initiatives like Forewarned is Forearmed is designed to empower growers to make confident decisions.
“Every farm is different, but with the ability to interpret forecasting tools, knowledge and resources on resilience planning, individual growers can make the best decisions in protecting their crops and strengthening their farm against risk,” George said.
George continued, “this workshop is designed to give growers know-how they can take back to their farm and apply in a way that is tailored to their needs.”
