Supporting horticulture to navigate the carbon space
As a horticultural grower you may have heard about:
the opportunity to diversity your income by generating carbon credits in carbon farming projects and selling these offsets in carbon markets
a range of confusing terms including sequestration, mitigation and insets, or
concerns that carbon account reporting might simply be part of a broader ESG agenda.
A new Carbon Outreach project, delivered by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), has been established to provide independent information about what is happening in this space.
Project Lead Liz King said, “it was important that producers had access to information to help them make an informed decision about their involvement in carbon farming projects as well as steps they might take to decarbonise their businesses.”

A range of industry specific calculators are available free on the internet, and
Producers with basic farm records at hand should be able to calculate their carbon account and carbon intensity of their produce in 10-15 minutes.

The Carbon Outreach project is part of the Farm Business Resilience Program, which is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund and the Queensland Government’s Drought and Climate Adaptation Program.
